South Dakota – Lake Oahe

South Dakota is without question the place to hunt pheasant, however the Sharptailed Grouse and Hungarian Partridge can also be found in staggering numbers. The vast sections of native prairie, pasture lands, agricultural fields, long draws, coulee bottoms and unending habitat create bird cover that is second to none. Sharptail grouse, prairie chicken, hungarian partridge, wild turkey, and sloughs of waterfowl are also found in good numbers throughout this part of South Dakota. It is a true sportsman’s paradise, offering great fishing and big game hunting as well.

Lake Oahe (Missouri River) has a unique draw for sportsman, superb fishing, waterfowl hunting and upland bird hunts that are off the charts. Hunting 30,000 + acres the Browns Hunting Ranch spans both sides of the Missouri River, hunting 4 different locations. This ranch is all about habitat and conservation offering trophy whitetail and mule deer besides the unmatched bird hunting. Within a short flight of the river bottoms sharptails and pheasants feed in flocks of which I have never seen, many times creating a cloud of birds such as a flock of geese on the horizon. The sight is unbelievable it is something you need to see and experience.

Our bird hunts begin November 1st and continue through December.  The late opening has two major advantages. One is the lack of hunting pressure, for these areas it will be the opening day. Secondly, it will assure us the corn and sunflower harvest will be over and crops off the fields. The lack of standing crops will force birds to use their loafing areas more frequently, giving us high percentage hunting areas. Here the dog work will shine, watch these animated and graceful setters pin roosters, flocks of sharptail and coveys of huns along the golden wheat stubble. Hunting pheasant we offer both flushing and pointing dogs in order to match conditions and hunting situations.

Here too all our hunts are inclusive, guiding, lodging, field transportation, meals and beverages. Our hunts are once again limited to two guns per guide and double guns required, with a daily maximum of 12 hunters. We welcome non hunters too for an additional daily fee; the sights are spectacular and the area magical, we look forward to sharing the west with you.

Hunting this part of South Dakota is a highlight of my year, I am sure it will become the same for you. It is the spirit and vastness of this land that makes it so special for me, it is my hope you will join us to experience this for yourself. For bird hunters it is a piece of heaven.
