It seems like yesterday Gayle and I were cleaning out the old hen house to make it our lodge, Josh was one year old, (now 28 and Travis still a sparkle in our eyes) and were living on Steve’s dream of starting a shooting preserve with Gayle singing the “Song of Ruth”. That was back in 1984, we were 25 and 24 and full of energy.
Little Moran is named for the small stream that winds through the property, offering great wood duck, ruffed grouse, and deer hunting. Originally the farm was 200 acres of mixed timber and farm land. In 1987 Steve and Gayle purchased 120 acres of prime hunting habitat that bordered the family farm. The hunting and kennel grew with the addition of our grouse hunts, however our focus was the preserve. Today we hunt 320 acres with a variety of cover. In recognition of our habitat, grounds and facility we were chosen to host the 2011 English Cocker National Championship Field Trial, what an honor!
We hunt pheasant and chukar from September through December, then again from mid-March through May. We are a semi private club, meaning membership has its privileges! Members can hunt 7 days a week, hunting scratch or set birds and at reduced rates. With memberships there are other discounts available for lodging, dining and our wild bird hunts in all 4 states. Please contact us for more information.
Dining and lodging are also a large part of Little Moran, Gayle’s reputation for her culinary skills grew right along with Steve’s guiding and training. Gayle specializes in game with an extensive menu for our guests to choose from. Besides game dinners she offers a more traditional menu, tailored to suit every ones palate. Our bed and breakfast also added another dimension to the farm – Moran Creek Bed and Breakfast caters to those for over night or extended stay, it’s peaceful, quaint and comfortable perfect for larger groups or a couple wanting a private night of their own. Bring your wine or spirits relaxing in front of a roaring fire or overlooking windmill pond. This is your time! Our success has been the diversity of all we do. We are a destination off the beaten path, but once our guests are here they call it home.
Many changes have occurred at Little Moran, a new log lodge, our B&B, and other guest cabins for hunting and non hunting guests. Wind Mill Pond is full of fish for those learning to cast a fly, or the youngsters catching their first blue gill. Many consider it a perfect place to relax and just get away.
Pheasant hunting is still a main stay for Little Moran with September – December being “our time”. We’ve got a wonderful staff that are committed to the service and hospitality that has made our club so unique. We realize there is more to our place than just hunting. Our facility is north woods style and very comfortable whether you are here for day hunts, overnight, a weekend or longer it’s our service and hospitality that we want you to remember.
